Cut! GRC Influencers Embrace Film
December 18, 2008
After re-reading my previous posting, it sounded a little ominous. It left me wanting more information about former U.S. Comptroller David Walker’s campaign to spread the word about the U.S. government’s precarious financial situation.
Well, I found a lot more information, some of it in a medium that I was surprised to see a GRC influencer embrace: documentary film.
Walker now works as president and CEO of The Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which was formed this year by the Blackstone Group co-founder. Its mission is to raise awareness and address fiscal sustainability issues related to federal deficits, tax policies and other government programs.
(A blurb on the PGP Foundation’s home page notes that your – and my -- burden of our federal debt stands at $184,000.)
The foundation is promoting I.O.U.S.A, a documentary that examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the United States and you and me. If you want some more (alarming and necessary) information about Walker’s argument and mission, a 30-minute version of the film can be viewed here.
Walker’s mission seems quite similar to what he did so well during his tenure at the Government Accountability Office. Only now, he’s seeking to reach a much larger audience: citizens whose lives are being affected in troubling ways by his former audience of policymakers and legislators.
