Cox Steps Down

January 21, 2009

As FEI blogger Edith Orenstein reports, SEC Chairman Christopher Cox’s picture is no longer on the agency’s web site listing “Current SEC Commissioners.”

Cox resigned yesterday, as reported by Bloomberg.

The article contains some colorful quotes about Cox’s performance; these assessments range from “unlucky” (Robert Hillman, who teaches securities law at the University of California, Davis) to, well, much worse: “The SEC is in worse shape today than the French army was after its defeat at Waterloo.” (former SEC chief accountant Lynn Turner).

In honor of the spirit of change (and hope), here’s a Forbes profile of Cox’s presumptive successor, Mary Schapiro.
